Search engine optimisation does not have to be complicated. Before spending on ads, make sure the basics on your own website are right. Here are ten checks you can start with today.
1. Every page has a unique title and description
The title and meta description are what people see in Google results. Keep titles to around 60 characters, include your main keyword and your brand, and write descriptions that make people want to click.
2. One clear H1 per page
Each page should have one main heading that says what the page is about, followed by logical H2 and H3 sub-headings.
3. The site loads fast
Slow pages lose visitors and rankings. Compress images, use modern formats such as WebP, remove unused plugins and scripts, and use caching. Test your pages with Google PageSpeed Insights.
4. It works perfectly on mobile
Google mainly uses the mobile version of your site for ranking. Check that text is readable, buttons are easy to tap and nothing scrolls sideways on a phone.
5. The site is secure (HTTPS)
An SSL certificate protects your visitors and is a basic trust signal for both users and search engines.
6. Images have descriptive alt text
Alt text helps visually impaired visitors and tells Google what an image shows. Describe the image naturally rather than stuffing keywords.
7. Your content answers real questions
Write pages and articles around what your customers actually search for. Helpful, original content is the most reliable way to earn rankings over time.
8. Pages link to each other
Internal links help visitors find related services and help Google understand your site structure. Link from your articles to the service pages they relate to.
9. Google can find all your pages
Submit your XML sitemap in Google Search Console, check for pages that are blocked or return errors, and fix broken links.
10. Your business is on Google Maps
For local customers, a complete and verified Google Business Profile with correct hours, phone number and photos can bring in more calls than your website alone.
